The Leap - 1961 by

Boris Hars-Tschachotin

  • On August 15, 1961, nineteen-year-old border police officer Conrad Schumann fled to western Berlin by jumping over barbed wire. Photographer Peter Leibing captured this moment. The photo of Schumann's escape became an icon of the 20th century and, according to Time Magazine, is one of the 100 photographs that changed the world.

  • Like no other picture, it stands for the division of Germany and the history of Berlin during the Cold War. The jump is a 360° virtual reality installation in which the creation of the iconographic photo of Leibing can be experienced from the perspective of Conrad Schuman.
